Produced by the brilliant guitarist Diogo Clemente, the aptly named Fado Tradicional includes classics from Amalia’s repertoire (‘Ai Esta Pena de Mim’, ‘Na Rua Do Silêncio’), a piece by legendary poet Fernando Pessoa (‘Dona Rosa’) alongside songs performed by all the great fadistos (‘Fado Vianinha’).

The album also features some new compositions, written by Jorge Fernando and Diogo Clemente, which express a pure respect for the traditions of Alfama’s casas do fado.

Accompanied by the crystalline chords of Portuguese guitar, with acoustic guitar and double bass, the effortless strength and nuances of Mariza’s voice shine through. The architect Frank Gehry was inspired to design a concert hall interior for her which conjured up the cosy intimacy of a fado taverna. With an upcoming tour to support the release of this album, Mariza’s spellbinding voice will no doubt be transforming stages worldwide into casas do fado.
