The story of fado got poorer today with the death of Raul Nery,
guitarist who accompanied several fado singers from Amalia Rodrigues to
Alfredo Marceneiro.
The guitarist Raul Nery, (the one at the center in photo) 91 years old, died today morning at his residence in Lisbon, told to Lusa the director of the Museum of Fado, Sara Pereira. Raul Nery, an engineer by profession, founded in 1959 the first fado guitar group, wich was composed in addition to Nery, by José Fontes Rocha, Julio Gomes and Joel Pina. In the past 10 June he had been condecorated by the President with the Order of Merit, Commander level. As an instrumentalist he accompanied all the big names of fado until the 1980's, among them: Amalia Rodrigues, Herminia Silva, Maria Teresa de Noronha, Berta Cardoso, Fernando Farinha, Tristão da Silva, Teresa Tarouca, Tony de Matos and Alfredo Marceneiro. |
